What is required to become a Naturopathic Doctor (ND)

Prior to entering or applying to one of the seven accredited schools (www.aanmc.org) a student must have completed 4 years of post secondary education as a minimum requirement. The seven schools do vary as to which classes are required a prerequisites, so it is important to review their individual entrance requirements.

Upon entry, each institution will have a set curriculum approved by NABNE (North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners) and CNME (Council of Naturopathic Medical Education) who oversee the compliance of all the schools to the required content and curriculum necessary for earning a degree in Naturopathic Medicine. Refer to the institution of your choice for the specific requirements and educational classes.

If you are desiring to meet the rigorous standards of a Naturopath take extra caution to enroll in one of the seven approved and accredited institutions of Naturopathic Medicine. All students are trained as general medical practitioners with the additional training in the CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) modalities that fit within the scope of Naturopathic Medicine. Not all these modalities are within the scope of practice in every jurisdiction in North America, so it is important to check into your local governance to determine your specific scope of practice.

For example, in Canada, British Columbia has the widest scope of practice. In the United States, Arizona and Vermont have the widest scopes. Start your homework early to determine where you want to practice and what you will be allowed to practice in your area.
