Marriage and Family Therapy

I have a Master’s degree in mental health counseling and in the area of Marriage and Family Therapy. I have practiced this specialty since 1998 n both the United States and Canada. My forte is working with very difficult patients and families, i.e. pre-divorce, post-second marriage, blended families, same sex relationship, etc.

Addictions of All Types

I have specialty training in the area of addictions, through NADAC in the United States. I have achieved the recognition as a Master’s Addiction Counselor (MAC). Again I have worked with very difficult populations including chronic inebriates, homeless and mentally ill, court ordered adults and teens as well as methamphetamine and heroin users.

Eating Disorders

I have extensive experience working with both anorexia and bulimia patients, both male and female. These disorders do fit under both addiction and mental health concerns. I have training in narrative therapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy to address these issue individually and from a whole systems perspective.

Child & Adult Mental Health Issues

Having working with chronic mentally ill and dual-diagnosis populations, I have direct, hands-on-training with these populations. My work with homeless, multi-diagnosed men and women provide me with the knowledge, background and experience to work with these difficult populations.

Domestic Violence and Trauma

I have been fully trained and accredited in the Minnesota Model of domestic violence interventions. I have works with men, women and teenage offenders. I have experience with courts and court ordered treatment and reporting protocols. I believe the domestic violence is a learned behavior and that there is never a valid reason to physical, mentally or emotional abuse another person in an intimate relationship.

I have also received training in trauma treatment via Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This as well studied intervention for helping to lessen flashbacks and nightmares associated with traumatic experience.

HIV and Sexuality Concerns, Including Transgender & Coming Out Health Issues

I received my initial HIV training in 1993 while working with gay and lesbian adult struggling with addictions. My training as continued through the years and I have undertaken several presentations to youth and adults on HIV prevention, awareness, conversion risks, etc. I have also work with the transgendered community to provide counseling and guidance through coming out, pre and post surgical interventions and general mental health concerns. I continue to provide a supportive and safe environment for address issues related to sexuality and health in my current practice.
